institutional spaces
Well I started out with the idea of posting art in the places shown here, but then I either chickened out, or I just found myself more interested in the places themselves, that, if we are to discuss public places, are ever present in our daily lives.
When art is placed in these spaces, I don't necessarily like how it acts. At the same time, such spaces share something with the 'white cube'. What, if anything, would be the appropriate art action or display in these places? Art as resistance? Beautification? Reflection?
I've started to comment on other posts, I think if we started commenting it would liven this blog up. And now that the blog headings are no longer in Chinese (who might have done that?) it's easier to see where the post comment button is :-D... Also, is there a way for us to display comments automatically on the home page with the original posts?

So.. art in public places. Im often saddened by the lack of art in our public space in southern california. My other town.. Charlotte NC includes public art in every form and fashion... resistance.. beautification and reflection and. Even a wall drawing by Sol LeWitt is included. My favorite piece I saw on my last visit was a big blobby thing covered with ceramic pieces and had large poles jabbed in it. It was quite ugly and the most interesting aspect is a fervent dialogue of controversy surrounding it. Should it stay or should it go? Every local had their opinions about.
ReplyDeleteI would enjoy more of that in in socal.
Hey Matt, Can we add photos under comments? Can't figure it out. Anyway, am curious to know what you would place in these spaces? I Imagine that it would not take much to disrupt the space, and would prompt the viewer to simply slow down and observe a curiosity placed for their enjoyment or questioning. .. I specifically like the idea of it being an anonymous gift. It would definitely take me out of the autopilot state and into the body.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we can post photos under comments. I'm not sure what I'd put there, maybe I would want the places designed differently. I think graffiti works differently than what you're saying above about slowness (this isn't a value judgment though). Maybe some kind of performance in the space or oppositely, a small hand drawn picture. Maybe a drawing of that place. Or something precious. mw
